Your aims!! 1- Have a clear definition and simple understanding of each concept linked to culture 2- Relate a relevant example to each concept 3-Know how each maybe affected by factors including: culture, society, religion, gender or class (Taken from the OCR spec)
Norms = social expectations that guide our behaviour = for example, it is seen as the norm for children to go to school everyday Values = a belief or idea that an individual or group determines as desirable or correct = for example, we value the right of freedom within society Identity = the distinguishing characteristic of a person = for example, whether you are male or female Status = the position or rank of someone or something within society = for example, your social class status e.g. underclass, working class, middle class, upper class >this links directly to the class hierarchy Roles = the position someone plays within society and the expectations of this position = for example, parents are expected to care for their children and socialise them in the correct way, that reflects the social norms of society Culture = the attitudes, beliefs, behaviour, and values of a certain group or organisation within society = for example, middle class culture stereotypically involves: extra curricular activities, travelling, the theatre, museums etc. Subculture = a group within a culture, that differs from the larger culture that it belongs to = for example, Goths - they dress differently, have different beliefs and behave differently to the majority within society
How may they be affected by other factors? 1- NORMS = affected by gender and class as different expectations are expected from different groups of people > for example, it is socially normal for men to be expected to be tough and aggressive, whereas women are expected to be caring and nurturing - these are social norms! 2-VALUES = affected by different religions > for example, Christians may have different values to Muslims 3- IDENTITY = affected by social class > for example differences in class determine the social status of your identity 4- STATUS = affected by gender or class > for example, patriarchal dominance means that men are positioned more powerful in society, than females are. In terms of class, the higher up the class hierarchy you are the more powerful you seem to be, as you develop more culture which reflects power and status 5-ROLES = affected by gender > for example, females are expected to be the caring and nurturing mum, whilst the men go out to work. These are stereotypically expected roles of men an women 6-CULTURE = affected by social class > the more culture you have the higher up the social hierarchy you position and vice versa 7- SUBCULTURE = affected by religion> some individuals deviate away form the norms within their religion and become extremists
PEDAGOGICAL IDEAS: 1: To start - show the class two different music videos and ask them to identify what type of culture they are from - draw a mind map on the board and ask each child to come up and write down an idea relating to culture (go on to discuss this mind map and ask children to make note of it) 2: Explain that there are many concepts relating to culture - give the students a story board to draw a definition of each of the previous words 3: Put the words in a hat and ask the children to come up and describe their word to the rest of the class for the children to guess 4:Create a debate for children to talk about how each are affected by other influencing factors 5: Discuss the current gay marriage vote in Ireland and how that links to culture >begin by asking how being gay links to the previous concepts and then discuss on a broader cultural level (see this link: http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/579493/Ireland-gay-marriage-vote-heading-for-a-yes-result ) 6: Show them the culture shock video clip - to show how different cultures differ 7: Ask children to create a profile of an individual and get them to link in the previous key concepts (draw and add notes) <this could lead to finishing off as a homework task OR set as a homework task if lesson time runs out
