Key concepts: Politics = power is used to affect he scope and content of government activities Sovereignty = a states supreme power within its borders Citizenship = status of a person recognized under the custom or law as being a member of a state Authoritarianism = favouring complete obedience or subjection to authority as opposed to individual freedom Democracy = a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives Representative democracy = political systems where decisions affecting a community are taken on by those elected for that purpose Communism = system of social organization in which all property is owned by the community and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs Nationalism = patriotic feeling Nation state = a sovereign state of which most of the citizens or subjects are united also by factors which define a nation, such as language or common descent

Pedagogy: Show the pupils the image of the mind map regarding spending in the UK > ask the pupils what this is and what it relates too? - What are there first thoughts when they see this image? How do they feel about what is on the mind map? Would they change anything? (try to spark a debate) Question: What is politics and why is it important? Ask pupils to design a mind map about everything they know regarding politics (come back as a class and get them to share ideas) Key cards = work in pairs and the first pair to match correctly all the words and definitions wins a prize Ask each pupil to research into a different governmental party - present to class (extension task as homework) Spit the class into the parties that they have researched into - ask them to form a proposal as to why they should lead the country Globalisation and politics - create a drawing/story board/ poster to explain the connection between the two
