Your aims!! - have a general overview of the process of socialisation and understand how it affects behaviour and identity -have a simple understanding of the agencies involved in the socialisation process -have examples of how each agent socialises and controls us Key concepts: Primary socialisation = process by which children learn norms of the society they are born into - largely relating to the family Secondary socialisation = happens during later childhood, and is the process by which behavioural patterns are taught, influenced upon us and reinforced by other agents within society, other than the family Formal social control = mechanisms to regulate group behaviour to enable conformity and compliance - formal links to government Informal social control = control expressed through norms and ideas such as discrimination etc. Rewards and sanctions = following good behaviour will equal rewards and bad behaviour will equal sanctions
How does socialisation affect behaviour and identity? - introducing people into social situations which shows them the socially normal ways to behave -passing on ideologies around the correct and socially normal and expected identities -pursuing knowledge from others which they deem as the socially normal and correct ways to behave and look
Agencies involved in the socialisation process and how each agent socialises and controls us Family -introduce us to their ideologies, beliefs and social norms in ways they see are correct e.g. teach us not to swear Mass media -role models in the media (celebrities) that create rituals on how to look and behave > manipulated into following how they look, dress and act e.g. following the weight loss trends of celebrities Peers - peer group pressure = social pressures forced by a friendship group that lead an individual to behave a certain way e.g. pressured by friends to steal as it gains the individual respect and status within the group Education - hidden curriculum = the unwritten and unofficial lessons learnt at school without even realising e.g. acceptable behaviour, learning to conform to rules, wearing a uniform etc. Work - learning the acceptable and unacceptable ways to behave e.g. correct clothes to wear within the workplace
PEDAGOGY: -are we born or made human? (nature/nurture) -write down everything you know about socialisation -matching pairs - have the key concepts and definitions for the pupils to match up -ask the children to list everything they think they learnt from their parents -create examples of situations and children need to identify whether it was a form of primary or secondary socialisation - role play of the peer group socialisation - then get children to make a story board of the key peer groups they can think of e.g. geeks etc. -how could the media influence us? - set up different stations around the classroom with news articles, magazine articles, photograph, posters and adverts - at each one students need to write down an answer to the set question (this is done in small groups) -create an imaginary individual describe different things about her and ask the children to identify whether different aspects of that person may have been influenced by primary or secondary socialisation -whilst also identifying which agencies -show YouTube clip - ask the pupils to take notes linking to all the key concepts -making note of the rewards and sanctions comment -set homework: either exam question or essay question for example: Outline and explain both positive and negative outcomes of socialisation. Making reference to at least two agencies.
